The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Global Cyber Security Alliance (GCSA)announced the joint establishment of the Centre for AI and Cybersecurity Research. The Centre will integrate the research and professional resources of both institutions in the fields of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, promote cutting-edge research, facilitate the deep integration of research findings with real-world security scenarios, and explore new technologies, methods, and governance frameworks in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity.

The institute will be headed by Professor Ho Chan, Chair Professor of Cybersecurity at the School of Computing and Data Science, University of Hong Kong. It will bring together researchers from the University of Hong Kong, GCSA and international collaborating institutions, and invite experts in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and technology governance to participate in research and consultation, promoting interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration.

The institute will promote the integration of academic research with industry practice and will gradually release research results, security benchmarks, and open-source tools related to AI and cybersecurity. Its main research areas include:

  • Model-native safety and trustworthy AI: Enhancing the safety, interpretability, and robustness of large models and generative AI;

  • AI-driven automated threat defense: Applying AI to enhance the ability to detect and automatically defend against complex network attacks;

  • Safety assessment of cutting-edge technologies: conducting assessments of potential risks associated with next-generation technologies such as embodied intelligence, robotics, and the Internet of Things;

  • Global AI Safety Standards and Governance: Researching AI safety assessment standards and governance mechanisms, and promoting relevant international exchanges and cooperation.

Professor Chen Hao stated, "The rapid development of artificial intelligence has brought new security risks and governance challenges. The institute will connect academic research, security testing, and industrial practice, and promote the transformation and application of artificial intelligence security research results through interdisciplinary and international cooperation."
